The bird flu has resulted in the deaths of 95 % of our hens here in Arizona – approximately 6 million birds. This devastating turn of events means the loss of life for the hens, the loss of jobs for hundreds of employees, and the loss of an invaluable food resource both locally, and far beyond the Valley
Dear Hickman Supporters,
The recent outbreak of Avian Flu at our westside farms was a tragedy that did not have to happen. European countries have now been vaccinating their flocks for a couple of years and are gaining the upper hand on controlling this disease. That vaccine is actually made here in the U.S., but we export to other countries while our flocks go unprotected. At the expense of the egg industry and our consumers, we are effectively subsidizing the meat bird industry. They are strongly against vaccines because they feel the export markets would be closed to their surplus products. Please consider sending the message below to all of our elected officials and the USDA so we can start protecting our flocks in this country.
Sincerely,
Glenn Hickman, President
Hickman’s Family Farms
Dear_______
I am a consumer of eggs. The price and supply fluctuations over the past few years must stop. I understand that an approved vaccine to protect our country’s laying flock is manufactured already. It has been approved for use in European countries. Its effectiveness is proven. It’s safe for the chicken, unlike the wild virus that kills them quickly. Simple steps to keep the virus out of the barns has proven to be no help. The virus is no longer a seasonal event spread by migrating waterfowl. Please allow our egg producers to access this vaccine immediately.
